The Spiritual Care Association, in partnership with the Westberg Institute for Faith Community Nursing, offers three programs to Westberg affiliates interested in chaplaincy certification.

Please note that to qualify, you must:

  1. Join the Knowledge Sharing Platform Spiritual Care group. westberginstitute.org
  2. Have completed one of the following:
    1. The WI Foundations of Faith Community Nursing Course 2019 Edition or
    2. Have completed an earlier edition of the IPNRC Parish Nurse Basic Prep or Foundations course AND complete a current WI FCN Practice Update Webinar
    3. Provide proof of attendance and content outline of other faith community nursing preparation course for review by the WI FCN Chaplain Committee AND complete a current WI FCN Practice Update Webinar.

Option 1: Spiritual Care Generalist Certificate

You can earn the Spiritual Care Generalist Certificate by completing the following three online self-guided courses:

  1. What Every Health Care Professional Needs to Know About Spiritual Care
  2. When It’s Time to Say Goodbye – Introduction to Spiritual Care at the End of Life
  3. Talking about What Matters: Advanced Directives and Planning

 

Timeline to Complete:
You will have up to 6 months to successfully pass the three online courses.

 

Cost to Participate:
$435. Courtesy price of $249 to Westberg affiliates.

Certificate Valid for:
2 years

 

Continuing Nursing Education (CNEs)
Nursing Professional Development Contact hours are provided on request.

To Renew:
To renew the Spiritual Care Generalist Certificate, candidate must complete 4 hours of continuing education and pay a $49 renewal rate (every two years).

Option 2: Credentialing

You can earn the Credentialed Chaplain (CC) status and add it to your list of credentials by:

  1. Providing an official transcript of a Bachelor’s degree from a CHEA-accredited (or international equivalent) institution.
  2. Successfully completing the following online self-guided courses
    1. What Every Health Care Professional Needs to Know About Spiritual Care
    2. When It’s Time to Say Goodbye – Introduction to Spiritual Care at the End of Life
    3. Talking about What Matters: Advanced Directives and Planning
    4. Preparation for Standardized Clinical Knowledge Test for Board Certified and Credentialed Chaplains
  3. Submitting employer letter(s) verifying proof of working a minimum of 1,000 hours as a chaplain/ FCN providing direct spiritual care since completion of training, OR receive a Provisional CC status (which will be automatically transferred to CC status once the work hour requirement is fulfilled – within two years)
  4. Submitting three (3) letters of recommendation
  5. Agreeing to the accountability for ethical conduct
  6. Completing the FCN to Chaplain Orientation course.
  7. Successfully passing the Standardized Patient Exam
  8. Successfully passing the Standardized Clinical Knowledge Test

 

Timeline to Complete:
You will have up to 10 months to complete the process.

 

Cost to Participate:
$710. Courtesy price of $499 to Westberg affiliates.

Option 3: Board Certification

You can earn the Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) status and add it to your list of credentials by:

  1. Providing an official transcript of a Master’s degree from a CHEA-accredited (or international equivalent) institution.
  2. Completing two unit (800 hours) of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
  3. Successfully completing the following online self-guided courses
    1. What Every Health Care Professional Needs to Know About Spiritual Care
    2. What We Hear and Say: Spiritual Assessment and Documentation
    3. When It’s Time to Say Goodbye – Introduction to Spiritual Care at the End of Life
    4. Talking about What Matters: Advanced Directives and Planning
    5. More than Listening: Counseling Skills
    6. Preparation for Standardized Clinical Knowledge Test for Board Certified and Credentialed Chaplains
  4. Submitting employer letter(s) verifying proof of working a minimum of 2,000 hours as a chaplain/ FCN providing direct spiritual care since completion of training, OR receive a Provisional BCC status (which will be automatically transferred to BCC status once the work hour requirement is fulfilled – within two years)
  5. Submitting three (3) letters of recommendation
  6. Agreeing to the accountability for ethical conduct
  7. Completing the FCN to Chaplain Orientation course.
  8. Successfully passing the Standardized Patient Exam
  9. Successfully passing the Standardized Clinical Knowledge Test

 

Timeline to Complete:
You will have up to 12 months to complete the process.

 

Cost to Participate:
$1,755. Courtesy price of $1,299 to Westberg affiliates.
